As we kick off Infrastructure Week, Americans For Modern Transportation (AMT) presents the first day of our “By The Numbers” series, a daily feature of key data points that show the growing urgency to modernize America’s transportation system.
Earlier this week, POLITICO hosted a panel discussion on the prospects for a major national infrastructure push from President Trump and Congress. Entitled, “Rebuilding America: A New Infrastructure Agenda,” the conversation delved into the proposed components of a package and the political path necessary to secure federal investment in the year ahead.
Now, more than 25 years since we last improved the efficiency of our highway network, our mission has become increasingly important. As my grandfather would say, “we are trying to put ten pounds into a five-pound sack” as all modes of our transportation network struggle to keep up with increasing demands and the challenges of infrastructure designed for past generations.
Testimony from a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security hearing on freight and infrastructure policy incorrectly represented the impact that widespread adoption of Twin 33s, which already operate safely in 20 states, would have on the trucking industry and highway safety.
Our nation’s transportation networks face significant capacity constraints and serious safety challenges. As our country’s roads, highways, bridges, ports, and airports continue to deteriorate, bipartisan collaboration has become critical. We are hopeful that the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation can lead the way on developing support for the necessary investments and common-sense policies that will spur economic growth and job creation.
Earlier this week, during the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security hearing on truck safety, testimony incorrectly represented the potential safety and operational impacts of the widespread use of Twin 33 trailers, which are already allowed on portions of highways in 20 states nationwide.
The 115th Congress has a unique opportunity to lay the foundation for a modern American infrastructure system. The opportunity is also there to make sure that the vehicles on our nation’s roads and highways are safer by focusing on policies that will enhance truck technologies, roadway improvements and workforce development. We urge the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to support these types of investments and common-sense policies that will enhance safety as well as spur economic growth and job creation.
